This week I'm writing a series of posts designed to give parents ideas of activities they can do at home with their children that are fun and easy for children with autism, or typically developing children. Many of the activities I'll be writing about involve little preparation other than choosing the right kind of activities. I've mentioned in previous posts how I feel that parents should not let treatment stop outside of the treatment center. There are numerous activities/games parents can play with children on the spectrum that continue or supplement the therapy children with autism receive from mental health professionals, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists or school staff (etc). I hope posts this week will give you at least a few new ideas of games or activities you can try, or perhaps give you confidence that the games and activities you play with your child with autism are more than just a game. The simplest of everyday games/activities, some with no changes or a few minor changes, can make "therapy" at home effortless and fun. Maybe you will see how some of the games you play with your child with autism are naturally beneficial, and play them just a little more frequently.
